Poetry by Numbers - 2020

Poetry by Numbers was a project I did as part of an editorial paper while at university. Poetry is deeply connected to numbers — from the count of lines and stanzas to the rhythm created by syllables. Many classical forms, such as haiku, sonnets, and sestinas, rely on precise numerical structures to shape their rhythm and form. These forms of poetry date back hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

This book explores the significance of numbers in poetry’s structure. I examined forms such as haiku, sonnets, the fib, and N+7, all of which rely on numerical patterns, whether through syllable counts, word numbers, or mathematical sequences. Throughout the book I highlighted these numerical elements using varied type weights, dashes, and numerical markers above syllables. Some spreads focus on meaning and content, while others are more expressive and visually experimental.

The book primarily uses serif and typewriter typefaces (Poynter Display, ITC American Typewriter, Averia Serif Libre, JMH Typewriter Dry) to reflect traditional poetry formatting. I also included humorous, nonsensical poems to add playfulness, aiming to reveal the mathematical side of literature while referencing master poets like Shakespeare and the early haiku writers.
